In the summer of 1945, as the war came to an end, a defeated battalion of the Japanese Imperial Army found itself at the border of Burma, hoping to escape into Thailand. Mizushima is sent to persuade a group of holdouts to surrender—but what he discovers instead changes the course of his life. Separated from his comrades by the tragedy of war, he sets off on a quiet path of reflection. Disguised as a Buddhist monk, Mizushima begins a personal quest for peace of mind. The Burmese Harp is a humanist masterpiece directed by Kon Ichikawa, one of the most accomplished masters of Japanese cinema.
