Born in Miyagi, director Sonomi Sato returned to her hometown after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami to tell the stories that shaped her. Spring After Spring Passes Us By... paints a delicate portrait of Yuumi, a teenage girl learning to live with the loss of her sister, while the friendship she once leaned on begins to slip away. If These Letters Reach Your Eyes captures the voices of children who survived the tragedy at Okawa Elementary School. Sato, who also lost family, turns her camera toward them—and the letters they wrote to their lost loved ones. Blending fiction and documentary, she offers a deeply personal lens on grief, resilience, and the echoes of memory time cannot erase.
